Peru Poised to bring Big Business to South America, and the World

Last month, U.S. Translation Company President and Honorary Peruvian Consul in Utah David Utrilla led a delegation of state officials to Piura and Lima, Peru. The purpose of the trip involved diplomacy, education, and increasing trade between the two countries.

The itinerary included contact with small business owners, working tours of important trade and agricultural sites, and meetings with potential funding sources and Peruvian Government officials.

The first stop on the trip was a region called Piura, an area on the northern portion of Peru, it boasts trade and manufacturing on a potentially global scale. Multiple growing climates in the area are able produce almost any kind of vegetable and fruit, year-round. Touring an organic banana plantation and a trade port on the coast poised to make a huge impact on trade within the Americas – Similar to the success of its neighbor Chile – the production and trade possibilities are something that Utah, and the rest of the U.S. is taking a good look at.

Brazil has been a favorite trade and commerce partner with North America because of stable and friendly political ties with the U.S. But Peru is one of the fastest growing economies and has enjoyed relative political peace and a nationwide increase in prosperity within the last decade.

The CETICOS trade port will also open a crucial route to a lucrative Asian market giving investors a chance to add ways to do business with the continent. Peruvian officials explained problems the region was having involving their irrigation and other water related issues as well as infrastructure needs that would help the region increase productivity.

“Peru is growing in terms of its capabilities to do business with the U.S.,” Consul Utrilla said. “But there are still issues that need to be addressed here to make this area as successful as possible.”

Upon returning, Utah State Sen. Mark Madsen conveyed his intention to continue exploring Peru and the Piura region, and promised to lead another trade mission with several interested business owners, engineers and agricultural experts within the next six months.
