Social Media Serenade - Global View March 2010

It may surprise you to find out that U.S. Translation Company is now on Facebook.

It shouldn't.

It's hard to find a business that isn't currently trying to exploit social media outlets in this age of the marketing megaplex commonly known as: The Internet. From corporate giants like Starbucks Coffee (currently at 6.2 million fans), to neighborhood restaurants posting menus; social media outlets like Facebook, Twitter, Blogs, and YouTube all have limitless possibilities for content to reach an audience with the message you choose to deliver.

USTC posted our first item (staff pictures from our main office in Ogden, UT) on Facebook on February 8, 2010. We currently have 147 fans--a far cry from 6.2 million, but a good start.

We, just as any other small business, felt it was necessary to be a part of the social revolution; not only to have a presence in the social networking community, but to open yet another line of communication between clients, linguists and our company. So far, so good. It didn't take long for many of our talented translators and interpreters to become fans and it's exciting to put a face with the name and voice of business contacts that we work with on a day-to-day basis.

It's also fun to interact through questions, pictures, and video with people that otherwise wouldn't have a chance to see these little snapshots of our work day. In its simplest form, the social media sites many businesses use to give themselves a competitive edge are helping to create bonds that go beyond the dollars and sense of a fast-paced, often impersonal, commercial marketplace.

The accounting agent, the contractor, the tech guy, and the boss all have an equal role in the realm of social networking, and it can sometimes make breaking the ice, or learning more about a person, that much easier.

Around the same time we started blogging as a mini-forum to discuss issues and voice our opinions on things we come across in the daily grind of the translation services biz. Most posts deal with some aspect of the industry, but others go beyond translation and into seemingly unrelated subjects that we want to talk about. It's therapeutic.

We'll inevitably find our way to the next latest trend in networking (social or otherwise) and become part of that outlet too. We're followers that way. It may seem like we're hopping on the social media bandwagon, but we view it as more than that. We see it as an opportunity to meet and interact with more clients, linguists, co-workers, and friends.
